We usually think of games as fun… They may or may not make you laugh, but a good game can challenge you in some way. Sometimes the fun is in the challenge.
Games offer many opportunities for memorable engagement. They can offer the thrill of discovery or the satisfaction of reward. They can also give you the disappointment of defeat – which can be even more educational than winning. By placing your educational content into the format of a game the content can be artfully woven into the game format to create a lasting memory.
For example, in the Puma Challenge, the “game” involves trying to help a puma survive. The resulting feedback from users was that they felt like they were a puma. Participants could identify with the plight of the puma as their environment steadily shrinks. While not a game that makes you smile and laugh, it is a game that can have a lasting impact.
