The Impact of AI in L&D: Reflections from DevLearn 2023

I just returned from an inspiring week at DevLearn 2023, and the resounding message was clear: AI is revolutionizing every facet of Learning and Development. It's a game-changer that's shaping our industry in unprecedented ways.

Harnessing the Power of AI

As I sat through sessions and engaged with industry experts, I couldn't help but imagine the potential for AI to change instructional design. My biggest takeaway was that AI is here, and those who learn to harness its power will spend less time on tedious tasks and have more time to do what they love.

However, it's crucial to approach AI with a critical mindset. AI is a powerful assistant, but it's essential not to blindly trust it. We must review and scrutinize its outputs for potential bias and "hallucinations."

AI-Focused Presentations

The AI and Learning Symposium at DevLearn 2023 showcased remarkable thought leaders who left a lasting impression. Mike Hruska opened our minds to the possibilities of AI, and Markus Bernhardt taught us the fundamentals. Jennifer Foster's session demonstrated how she's integrated AI into her workflow to create scenarios, write code for interactive elements, summarize meeting takeaways with SMEs, and more. John Cavalier got us excited about what a well-crafted ChatGPT prompt can do. Vince Han inspired us to explore the potential of AI by asking us how having a personal customer service bot would change our relationship with an organization and how bots could be used for skill development and continuous learning. Kerry Munz made us look to the future. Lastly, Carie Whitehead and Simon Taghioff also joined the group to enlighten us on the ethical considerations of AI.

One take-away I had from the Guild Master Panel was the excitement people had for AI to streamline content creation and project management tasks, giving us more time for those invaluable tasks that are often left out of the budget, such as implementing adaptive learning and measuring performance.

The Future of AI

In summary, AI is here to assist us, not replace us. With the right approach, it can be a catalyst for innovation and transformation in L&D. If you missed DevLearn 2023, make sure to keep an eye on AI's role in L&D—it's an exciting journey we're all on!
