Top 5 Takeaways from DevLearn 2024: Embracing the Future of eLearning

After an exciting few days at DevLearn 2024, I’m returning with fresh insights and a renewed perspective on how learning and development (L&D) is evolving. Here are my top five takeaways, reflecting the innovative trends and ideas that stood out.

1. The Human Experience and Personalization

One of the most discussed themes was the potential of AI to hyper-personalize eLearning experiences. The “Human-AI-Human” approach was presented as a guiding principle for using AI in L&D. Rather than viewing AI as a replacement, view it as a tool that should amplify human interaction and enhance the personal impact of learning experiences. By using AI for content development, instructional designers can focus on building richer, more meaningful learner interactions.

2. Playing in the Sandbox: Experiment with Real Learning Solutions

DevLearn emphasized that this is an ideal time for learning experience designers to explore new technologies when creating solutions that are needed now. Experimenting with AI tools allows us to understand what each tool can (and can’t) do. We should set aside some time to investigate new tools, discover what’s possible, and prepare to leverage them effectively as they mature.

3. Embracing the Unknown: AI’s Expanding Role in Training

One of the most inspiring, yet challenging, takeaways was the acknowledgment that AI will become integral to the training industry, potentially in ways we can’t fully predict. Most of us use AI to help us with our existing tasks, but the reality is that it will likely transform the entire way we work. The rapid evolution of AI—from generating simulations to advanced analytics—will reshape the roles of L&D professionals. As the field grows, we should be open to redefining our work and incorporating AI in innovative ways that meet learners’ evolving needs.

4. Fostering a Culture of Continuous Learning and Experimentation with New Technology

DevLearn underscored the importance of building a culture where continuous learning and experimentation are the norm, especially as new technologies rapidly emerge. L&D leaders should encourage teams to stay curious, regularly explore new tools on real projects, and share insights on what works and what doesn’t. Establishing recurring meetings where teams can discuss their latest learnings, experiment with new tech, and set growth goals fosters this mindset. By embedding a habit of exploration and reflection, organizations can stay agile, keeping pace with technological advancements while empowering teams to innovate.

5. Technology Adoption: Start with the Problem, Not the Tool

A consistent theme was the reminder to avoid jumping on the tech bandwagon without a clear purpose. Whether integrating AI or any other tool, start by defining the problem you need to solve. With an ever-growing range of AI tools, select the approach that brings the most value for both the learners and the organization. It’s an exciting time to pilot these emerging tools but be cautious about committing to enterprise subscriptions too quickly. Take time to test and gather feedback on new learning technologies before making long-term commitments

Final Thoughts

DevLearn 2024 showed that we’re at the threshold of a transformative period in training, much like the early days of the internet or mobile technology. While AI will continue to reshape our field, it’s how we choose to integrate and humanize these tools that will define the future of learning.
